Great leaders are often expected to be bold and fearless, but the story of Gideon demonstrates that God doesn’t always call the fearless—He often calls the hesitant, the unsure, and the insecure because in our weakness, His strength shines brightest. God's power is not limited by our doubts.
If you feel unqualified or insecure, remember that God’s love is steadfast, and He can use you even when you don't feel ready.
A Fearful Start
When we first meet Gideon in Judges 6, he is anything but a picture of courage. Israel was suffering under the oppression of the Midianites, who regularly destroyed their crops and livestock. Gideon, rather than fighting back, was hiding in a winepress, threshing wheat in secret to avoid detection. It’s here that the angel of the Lord greets him with words that seem completely unfitting:
“The Lord is with you, mighty warrior” (Judges 6:12).
Mighty warrior? Gideon probably looked over his shoulder to see if the angel was talking to someone else. This was a man hiding out of fear—not leading an army, not rallying his people. His immediate response was one of doubt. Gideon doubted God’s presence, His power, and His ability to bring deliverance. His insecurity was evident, yet God didn’t give up on him.
God Calls the Unlikely
God often chooses the least likely candidates for His purposes, and Gideon was no exception. When the Lord called him to deliver Israel from the Midianites, Gideon felt unqualified. He came from a weak family and had no confidence in his ability to lead. Yet God wasn’t concerned with Gideon’s resume or his insecurities. God’s response was simple: “I will be with you."
God didn’t choose Gideon because of his strength, status, or skill. He chose Gideon because His power would be displayed through Gideon’s weakness.
Wrestling with Doubt
Even after hearing God’s promise, Gideon’s insecurity lingered. He needed constant reassurance from God. First, he asked for a sign that it was truly God speaking to him, and the Lord patiently confirmed His words. Later, Gideon asked for more signs, including the famous fleece test, where he asked God to make a fleece wet with dew while the ground remained dry—and then the reverse the next night.
God didn’t scold Gideon for his doubts or dismiss him for his lack of faith. Instead, He patiently met Gideon where he was, offering the reassurance he needed to move forward. If you’ve ever wrestled with doubts about God’s plan for your life, take heart: God is not afraid of your questions. He is patient, kind, and willing to meet you in your uncertainty.
Victory Through Obedience
Despite his fears, Gideon eventually obeyed God’s call. With just 300 men, God used Gideon to defeat the massive Midianite army in a way that left no doubt that the victory belonged to the Lord. What’s remarkable is that the same man who was hiding in a winepress became the leader of a miraculous triumph. Gideon’s transformation wasn’t because he suddenly became fearless or self-assured. It was because he trusted God enough to take the next step, even when he didn’t feel ready.
God’s Love Is Bigger Than Your Insecurities
Gideon’s story is a powerful reminder that God doesn’t see us through the lens of our insecurities or failures. He sees our potential and His plan for us. When we feel weak, He is strong. When we doubt ourselves, He is faithful.
Maybe you feel like Gideon today—hiding, doubting, or wondering if God could ever love or use someone like you. The truth is, God’s love and redemption are for you, no matter your insecurities or shortcomings. He doesn’t call the equipped; He equips the called.
Take the Next Step
Gideon’s story encourages us to take that first step of obedience, no matter how small it may seem. You don’t have to feel ready; you just have to trust that God is with you. Like Gideon, you may wrestle with doubt along the way, but God doesn’t expect us to have it all together. His grace is sufficient. He is patient with your fears and faithful to His promises.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12: 9
God doesn’t require us to be fearless, strong, or perfect. All He asks is that we trust Him and take one step at a time. His love is steadfast, and His redemption is possible for anyone willing to say yes—even the insecure leader hiding in the shadows. Like Gideon, you are loved, chosen, and capable of being used by God for extraordinary things. Will you trust Him today?
